When Games Machines Duel

As 2013 ages gracefully, only to end its 365-day life in a booze-aided food frenzy, it's high time to start reflecting on the year that was, if I could only think back beyond the last fortnight that is.

It's been a great year for electronic music - the quite brilliant return of Boards of Canada, not to mention albums from fellow veterans including Mike Paradinas (aka u-Ziq) and Four Tet, plus Jon Hopkins and James Holden - I'll attempt a longer gaze through the rear-view mirror in the new year. But before all that I must alert you to this ace track from Rival Consoles on the Erased Tapes label. 'Odyssey' begins life as a minimal moody chugger with John Carpenter-esque synths building the tension nicely, eloquently unfolding into a fairly epic, cosmic slice of slo-mo techno that sounds like it's just returned to earth in a wood-paneled space wagon.

Check it out below along with a suitably fried video courtesy of Michael Zoidis.

Rival Consoles 'Odyssey' is available now from Erased Tapes.

Morning Glory's Autumn Harvest

I'm trying to avoid clogging up my blog with my radio shows (of course if you're that way inclined you can always hear more over here), however I felt I should share this special program I put together to celebrate the coming of Autumn. Musically I wanted to reflect upon the beauty and melancholy of my most favourite of seasons. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Metamono 'With the compliments of Nuclear Physics'

The frankly brilliant Metamono are a London-based collective responsible for "soldering together latterday mechanical mutations from equipment too prematurely discarded by capitalism's hellbent tendency towards planned obsolescence". Musically, this translates as a hugely varied electronic trip steered by grizzled synths, fidgety drum machines and other such decrepit, dust-laden noise boxes. Their sound is warm, fuzzy and eccentric, recalling classic techno and electronica from yesteryear as well as fellow retro-enthusiasts such as the Ghost Box collective. Metamono have self-released a couple of very limited vinyl editions of their debut album 'With the compliments of Nuclear Physics' which you can find here, as well as a cassette.

This is undoubtedly one of the finest albums I've heard this year. Check it out below!

DJ Food 'O Is For Orange'

A real audio-visual treat for any Boards of Canada fans out there. This set was put together by DJ Food for a BoC-inspired night that took place in London earlier this year.

‘O Is For Orange’ is the sound of weathered tape saturation, detuned analogue synthesisers, vinyl crackle and machine hum. It’s also the look of unfocused, flickering lenses, mirror image filters and blurry grain embedded into film. Unofficial fan films sit alongside experimental animation, public information shorts and even the odd official video. Material that BoC took inspiration from blends with their own work as well as many that they inspired.

Lost Idol features at 30:00!

Morning Glory 15th July 2013

Back from a brief Summer break with a new Morning Glory. This week a new chapter in the Ghost Box 'Study Series' from Listening Center, the welcome return of electronica veteran Mike Paradians, primal electronics from James Holden, and a classic cut from Ulrich Schnauss.

Snook's been to Iceland

Once upon a time, not so long ago, I ran a record label by the name of Cookshop - that's another tale in itself - and on that label I released an EP by an enigmatic chap residing in Bristol named Zoon van snooK. A few years on and here we have the second full length album from the man himself, sadly not released by me but thankfully picked up by the good folk at Lo Recordings who have had the sense (and probably the pennies to rub together) to give this great artist the wider exposure he so rightly deserves.

Shimmering drone, wheezing melodica and a slow piano motif soundtrack our embarkment onto the mythical 'bridge between life and death'. As the record unfurls, in wonderfully unhurried fashion, we are treated to concise instrumental pieces, highly melodic in nature, that combine traditional instruments of all shapes and sizes - plucked, hammered, bowed and blown - with subtle electronic flourishes, found sounds and carefully sculpted beats.

Much of the record was inspired by and indeed recorded in Iceland; having been fortunate enough to once visit this magical place, I can say this record perfectly captures the mysterious beauty of the landscape and the effervescent eccentricity of its inhabitants; indeed a fair few locals lend Snook a hand here, including members of Amiina, Benni Hemm Hemm and Sin Fang.

Immediate (lazy) comparisons could be drawn to the likes of Mum, Four Tet, Psapp and Tunng, however Zoon van snooK has clearly been influenced moreover by a specific place, its dwellers, and their traditions and musics of old.

Zoon van snooK's 'The Bridge Between Life & Death' is released by Lo Recordings on 10th June.
